Our Services
The Newberry County Literacy Council offers a variety of programs and services to the local community of Newberry residents to enrich and assist their lives. We also urge residents to consider joining us for these events and activities!
The People's College
A college-like experience especially for those who missed out on college and those who want an engaging atmosphere. We read and discuss major authors, events, and works in world history, including presidential politics. Tutors are provided for those concerned about their ability to keep up. No tests, no pressure, no fees. An education for life by entering the world of ideas, discussions, and reflection that are the hallmarks of college. Meets weekly on Mondays over eight weeks.
Adult Literacy Program
Recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to tutor adults in language arts, math, English, and computer skills.
Computer Literacy
Provides classes in basic computer skills through Microsoft testing and certification. Can't afford college or institutional training? Why worry; our training is hands on, interactive and affordable. This program is designed for beginners, the curious, and job-seekers alike.
The Weekly Reader
The Literacy Council's book club. We meet Tuesdays at 11 AM and work our way through interesting fiction and non-fiction. We have read The Giver, Sounder, Lilies of the Field, The World Made Straight, A Lesson Before Dying, and others. People of all reading levels welcome. We provide tutors for those concerned about keeping up.
Family Literacy Program
Locally funded grants and personal contributions provides side-by-side adult literacy classes and early childhood education. While parents receive instruction in English or GED subjects, their children receive quality instruction. The program also includes interactive literacy activities and parenting education and support, including our Families and Schools Together (F.A.S.T.) Program. This initiative addresses the urgent social problems of youth violence and chronic juvenile delinquency - building and enhancing youth's relationships with their families, peers, teachers and school staff.
Summer Enrichment Camp
NCLC holds this camp in varied settings where children from ages 5-16 are given various experiences from different speakers, field trips, and extend educative opportunities during the summer.
